Good to know

At Buxtehude Museum, children can join guided children's tours, craft, research and experiment at the small Sunday workshop on weekends, or celebrate birthday parties with themes like a soap-making workshop or fairy-tale masks. Readings and themed days are also regularly on the program. The special exhibition around the race between the Hare and the Hedgehog tells the fable through book illustrations, film clips and objects, since the story is set in Buxtehude.

For families, the museum is appealing because it offers plenty of hands-on activities and is modestly sized — a mix of history, art and active participation without being overwhelming. On display are archaeological finds, objects on the city's history and culture, and rotating art exhibitions.

The museum is usually open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Buxtehude is easy to reach from Hamburg by S-Bahn, and the walk from the station to the old town can be combined with a stroll through the Fleth lanes.
