Good to know

At the BallinStadt Emigration Museum, children from around age five can explore the exhibition with museum mascot Jette the rat and step into the shoes of emigrants from different eras in the digital adventure game Simmigrant. Along the way they make decisions that shape how the story unfolds, discovering the conditions under which millions of people set off from the Port of Hamburg.

The museum is compelling for families because it makes the weighty topic of migration accessible through concrete life stories and interactive stations. The permanent exhibition spans four eras from the 19th century to the present, while changing special exhibitions address current questions around migration and displacement. The reconstructed HAPAG emigrant halls bring the historical atmosphere to life.

The Veddel is easily reached by S-Bahn. A visit can be planned for half a day to a full day.
