What it's about
On this tour of Hauptkirche St. Petri, visitors learn how the oldest of Hamburg's five main churches has been part of the city's history. First documented in 1195 as a market church, the Gothic church burned down almost entirely in the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842 — only a few foundation walls remained standing. Seven years later, today's hall church, rebuilt on the old floor plan, was ceremonially reconsecrated.
The tour shows how modern architecture blends into the historic building, connecting past and present. A good fit for families interested in Hamburg's city history — the church sees itself as an open place for everyone, regardless of denomination.
St. Petri is located right in the old town on Mönckebergstraße, centrally located between the city center's main shopping streets — a great addition to a family stroll through town.
