Good to know
At Wasserkunst Kaltehofe, families walk discovery trails between the old filter basins, watch wildlife like grey herons, swans, and beavers, and explore the historic buildings from outside. In the WasserForum, housed in a restored villa, an exhibition spans three floors on water supply, wastewater, and the water cycle. Regular family tours round out the offering.
The site combines an industrial heritage site, nature park, and exhibition. Starting in 1893, drinking water for Hamburg was filtered here following the great cholera epidemic. A more modern annex houses changing exhibitions and a cafe. There's no classic playground, but nature, paths, and open space invite children to explore.
Open April to October, Tuesday through Sunday, with fewer days in winter. Easily reached by bus or bike, and combines well with a tour along the Bille.
