Good to know
At NAJU Hamburg, the children's and youth organization of NABU, children and teenagers explore the nature right outside their door together. A fixed part of the program is the nationwide participatory bird counts: during the "Hour of the Winter Birds" in January and the "Hour of the Garden Birds" in May, families count the birds in their garden, on the balcony, or in the park for one hour and report their observations online or via app. Both activities are free and can be done anywhere in Hamburg right from your own window.
The program is explicitly aimed at children and teenagers, who learn in a playful way to recognize native bird species such as tits, finches, robins, and sparrows and to try out conservation themselves. Unlike a fixed excursion destination, NAJU is an association that organizes nature activities, groups, and festivals for young nature lovers throughout the year.
The bird counts can be done from home without prior knowledge and without registration and are also suitable for younger children. For groups and festivals, it is worth taking a look at the NAJU Hamburg website.
