Good to know

The Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte at Holstenwall is temporarily closed to visitors because of a comprehensive modernization. The ground floor closed on January 7, 2024, followed by the complete closure of the building. According to the Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg, reopening is planned for the end of 2028.

Plans include a barrier-free entrance, a passenger lift, new special exhibition space and seminar and workshop rooms. The permanent exhibition is being redesigned around six themed islands. A space called "Growing Up in Hamburg" is planned for families and young people, and the model railway will move to the 3rd floor.

During the closure the museum offers walking tours on Hamburg history, for example through St. Pauli and on 400 years of the Reeperbahn in October 2026. Online there are videos about the restoration and articles in the collection's journal. Other museums run by the foundation, such as the Museum der Arbeit and the Altonaer Museum, are open.
