Here, children can discover objects from Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Americas and Europe, from masks to musical instruments to everyday objects. Many themes come with tours and workshops explicitly aimed at younger visitors. Audio performances, discussion evenings and series such as the one on the Benin Bronzes show how alive a museum can be today.
MARKK was founded in 1879 and is now one of the largest ethnographic museums in Europe. The collections are being reconceived as part of a comprehensive modernization project, and the institution openly engages with questions of origin, context and the colonial history of its holdings. Special exhibitions and dialogue formats around the permanent exhibition-in-transition are a central part of the program.
The museum is located in Rotherbaum, just a few minutes from Dammtor, in a historic museum building. Large enough for a rainy afternoon, manageable enough not to tire you out.
