Good to know
At the Hamburger Kunsthalle, families can walk through the collection together every Saturday at Familienzeit and then get creative in the studio rooms with paint, paper, or collage. Holiday programs, workshops, and birthday parties round out the offering. The art education program is aimed at children from about five years old and makes art approachable and intriguing rather than intimidating.
The collection spans roughly 700 years of art history, from medieval altarpieces through Friedrich, Runge, Liebermann, and Munch to Richter, Polke, and contemporary positions. Three connected buildings — the old building, the new building, and the Gallery of the Present — offer a range that makes the juxtaposition of old and new especially engaging for children. Temporary exhibitions set new focal points every year.
The Kunsthalle is located directly at the main train station and is easily reached from anywhere in Hamburg. A visit pairs well with a walk around the Außenalster.
