Good to know

On Sunday mornings, families stroll among hundreds of market stalls selling fruit, vegetables, plants, eels, clothing, souvenirs, and huge baskets of fruit and flowers. The market callers, with their theatrical haggling, are the main draw for many. Inside the Fischauktionshalle, a live-music morning session runs during market hours — the atmosphere is lively and the acoustics distinctive, exciting for children.

The market has been held on Große Elbstraße since 1703 and opens very early: roughly 5 to 9:30 a.m., from 7 a.m. in winter. For families, arriving a bit later, around 8 a.m., is more comfortable — busy but manageable — and you can eat a fish sandwich by the water while excursion boats pass by. It gets noticeably busier during the Hafengeburtstag harbor festival.

Right by the Königstraße S-Bahn station, easily combined with a walk toward the Elbstrand beach, the Alter Elbtunnel, or the Portuguese Quarter.
