Good to know

The Energieberg Georgswerder is a learning venue run by Stadtreinigung Hamburg on a hazardous-waste landfill that closed in 1979, in Wilhelmsburg. Today the Horizontweg trail leads over the greened hill, which provides habitat for animals and generates energy. Admission is free.

In the information center, the permanent exhibition "Abfall im Wandel" (Waste in Transition) traces the path from garbage mountain to today with video projection, models and games. Children follow the characters Georg the garbage mountain, Momo the seagull and Binni the trash can through comics, audio stations and a puzzle. On Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 pm a free 90-minute tour starts; families of up to 8 people can join without registering.

It is open from April 1 to October 31, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and on weekends from 12 to 4 pm, and closed on public holidays. The address is Fiskalische Straße 2, and bus line 154 runs every 20 minutes from Berliner Tor, Wilhelmsburg or Harburg. An accessible toilet is available, and the Horizontweg is closed during thunderstorms.
