Good to know
At the Werkkiste in Ottensen, children can saw, drill, build, and craft pieces from scrap wood using child-friendly hand tools. On Wednesday afternoons is Open Workshop: just drop by, work at a shared workbench, or continue an ongoing project. You can already tell at the entrance door whether spots are free. Instructors help without taking the work out of the children's hands.
Besides the open workshop, there are workshop courses by age group, family crafting for joint projects between parents and children, holiday courses, and kids' birthday parties. A dedicated tool driving license teaches handling a saw, file, and cordless screwdriver over several sessions, ending with a certificate.
The Werkkiste is located in a courtyard in the heart of Ottensen, an easy walk from Altona station. The atmosphere is calm, creative, and deliberately not perfectionist — here a piece is allowed to turn out a bit crooked.
