Good to know

At the Deutsches Zollmuseum, children can view confiscated smuggling exhibits: drug hiding spots in everyday objects, preserved reptiles and ivory carvings from wildlife protection cases, counterfeit sneakers, and toys. There are also historical uniforms, a large customs boat outside on the canal, and interactive stations on the work of customs authorities today. A children's booklet guides the way through the house.

The museum is compact across two floors and easily manageable in an afternoon. It suits children from around age six; younger ones often lack the context for the smuggling stories. Admission is free, which makes spontaneous visits appealing even on bad-weather days.

For a family day, the customs museum combines well with a canal boat trip, the Speicherstadtmuseum, or Miniatur Wunderland. Plan for one to one and a half hours; the historical customs boat outside cannot be entered. Toilets and a seating area are available, with dining options close by.
