Good to know

At the Deutsches Salzmuseum in Lüneburg, children discover how the "white gold" was extracted from brine: in the demonstration boiling hut on the outdoor grounds, salt boilers demonstrate the medieval technique of boiling salt over a wood fire daily except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The permanent exhibition, housed in the last surviving boiling house of the saltworks, can be explored on your own with many hands-on stations. There is also a museum rally with a surprise at the end and an audio guide featuring its own children's track.

Salt was produced at the Lüneburg saltworks for over 1,000 years, making the town rich and powerful. Today the site is one of Germany's first industrial monuments. There are regular offerings for families: the free Salty Story Hour for children aged 3 to 6 on the first Wednesday of every month, family tours, and during the school holidays in Lower Saxony, hands-on Holiday Thursdays as well as grandparent-and-grandchild tours. Children and teenagers under 18 enjoy free admission to the museum.

Lüneburg can be reached from Hamburg in about thirty minutes by Metronom train, and the museum is within walking distance of the station. Combined with a stroll through the old town, to the Kalkberg, or into the spa park, it makes for a well-rounded day trip.
