Good to know
On board the Cap San Diego, children can go almost everywhere: up to the bridge and its real steering wheel, into the captain's cabin, through crew quarters, along narrow corridors into the cargo hold, and all the way down into the engine room. Steep stairways, big levers, and deep hull levels turn the tour into an explorer's paradise. Audio guides and occasional tours led by volunteer crew members bring maritime history to life without ever feeling dry.
The world's largest seaworthy museum cargo ship lies permanently moored at Überseebrücke and actually sails out a few times a year with up to 500 passengers. In modernized original cabins you can spend the night on board, which makes for a special family outing.
Sturdy shoes are important for the visit because of the steep stairways, and warm clothing is needed in cold weather since much of the ship is outdoors or in unheated rooms. Strollers can't go everywhere, so a baby carrier is handy for small children. There's a small café with a harbor view on board.
